(Updated) McCain Campaign Panics: Rezko, POW, and Pointy Headed Professor.

Yeah.  All at once.  Out. of Contol.  In McMansion McCainville.

You all know what happened.  McCain couldn't remember how many houses he owned.  Obama smacked him on it, with comments in a speech and a TV ad.  Now McCain's campaign literally is going nuts.  They know it's a game changer.

"We're delighted to have a real estate debate with Barack Obama," said spokesman Brian Rogers, adding that the press should focus on Obama's house. "It's a frickin' mansion. He doesn't tell people that. You have a mansion you bought in a shady deal with a convicted felon."

snip

That's fair game now," he said. "You are going to see more of that now that this issue has been joined. You'll see more of the Rezko matter from us."

snip

He also added: "This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison," referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War.

snip

"In terms of who's an elitist, I think people have made a judgment that John McCain is not an arugula-eating, pointy headed professor-type based on his life story."

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-tra il/2008/08/21/mccain_spokesmans_retort_o bama.html

I think they are losing it!!

It's not McCain's number of houses we're questioning, just his judgment.  :-)

This is fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Opening a Rezko website now!! Panic in McCainland. Keep pushing back on this.

Sen. John McCain's campaign is fighting back against questions about his house holdings by opening a website focusing on past questions about Sen. Barack Obama's dealings with controversial Chicago businesssman Tony Rezko. The campaign was getting the site ready Thursday afternoon. McCain surrogates on television were being armed with facts about Rezko's relationship to Obama's purchase of his Chicago home in 2005. Previewing the message the campaign will seek to drive, a McCain spokesman said: "In an attempt to make something stick, Barack Obama has re-aired his dirty laundry with convicted felon Tony Rezko that led to a highly questionable land deal. Rezko’s dirty dealings are well-documented and his relationship with Barack Obama goes back 20 years."

Re: Pointy Headed Professor?? (none / 0)

Isn't the term "pointy-headed professor" somewhat anti-Semitic? The term dates from the 1950s when Joe McCarthy and co. went after intellectuals and they used the term "pointy-headed" all the time. I think it was supposed to reference the prevalence of Jewish intellectuals associated with the Left.

Is this true?

Obama is going all out:

Obama Campaign Launches New TV Ad And Holds Events Throughout The Country On John McCain Losing Track of How Many Homes He Owns

Highlights Just How Out of Touch John McCain Is

CHICAGO - Today, the Obama campaign released a new 30-second TV ad, Seven, discussing just how out of touch John McCain is with the struggles of everyday people. The ad highlight's John McCain's desire to just offer more of the same economic policies we've gotten from President Bush, as just yesterday he declared "the fundamentals of our economy are strong" and lost track of how many houses he owns.

In addition, Obama supporters are speaking out in battleground states across the country about how out of touch Senator McCain is. Listed below is information on the ad as well as just a few of the events happening today across the country.

BURLINGTON, VT: Vermont State Representative Rachel Weston will be speaking outside her home about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

LA CROSSE, WI: State Rep. Jen Shilling and La Crosse Obama supporters host a news conference on McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

MADISON, WI: Former US Senator Jean Carnahan holds event in Madison with Women For Obama where she will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

DES MOINES, IA: Kansas Governor, Kathleen Sebelius campaigns in Des Moines this afternoon where she will discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

KANSAS CITY, MO: Obama Heartland Change RV Tour with State Senator Wes Shoemyer will visit a Missouri family in Kansas City to discuss McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

ST. PAUL, MN: State Senator Tarryl Clark discusses McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

BANGOR, ME: Rep. Mike Dunn, and House Majority Whip Sean Faircloth will hold a press conference to talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

PUEBLO, CO: State Rep. Terrance Carroll will hold an event with Obama supporters in Denver and State Sen. Abel Tapia about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

OH: Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns at events throughout southeast Ohio

ALTOONA, PA: State Senator John Wozniak will headline an event in Altoona, PA on McCain losing track of how many homes he owns and the campaign is also announcing a statewide search for anyone who doesn't know how many houses they own

MI: Campaign for Change offices across Michigan are launching a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: McCain Edition" contest where volunteers will be able to win a free "Exxon-McCain" bumper-sticker if they correctly guess the number of houses John McCain owns. Prizes will be only be awarded after McCain clarifies exactly how many houses he owns. To win, the answer must be specific -- "at least four" doesn't count.

TAMPA , FL: Campaign for Change in Florida launched a statewide search to find Floridians who, like John McCain, have so many homes that they just can't keep track of the number.

Raleigh, NC: Campaign for Change in North Carolina is holding a press conference in Raleigh with Representative G.K. Butterfield to talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

BILLINGS, MT: A local family will hold an availability in front of a house slated for foreclosure

NV: Congresswoman Berkley will host a conference call to talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

ANCHORAGE, AK: Local residents will hold a press availability to talk about McCain losing track of how many homes he owns

If this isn't on every evening news broadcast in the country tonight and over the next few days, your traditional media are frickin' out to lunch.

Give kudos to kitty at kos for this info

Holy shit, they really are going all out with this. I love it.

And McCain wants to run w/ Rezko? Its a non starter. Obama paid like 3% less than market value for the property in question, and there was never any connection w/ Obama and Rezko's shady dealings.

McCain would be better off running ads of Obama bowling. Not that I think that's a fair attack, but it would work better than Rezko for Chrissakes.

I have a distinct memory of buying Green Leaf lettuce in Alabama when I first moved there.  It was at a Wal-Mart (I know, I know) and when I took it up front to buy it, the cashier asked rather incredulously, "What's that?".  "Lettuce" I said.  "Lettuce?  Around here people eat regular lettuce."  By 'regular lettuce', of course, she meant Iceburg Lettuce.  Nearly all of the Iceburg Lettuce in the country in grown in California.  In Alabama, you could probably grow Green Leaf lettuce from seed in a matter of weeks and practically year-round.  Strange what people consider to be "regular" isn't it?

In a panic? (none / 0)

The McCain camp simply uses the issue as a justification for bringing up the Rezko connection, throwing that right back in Obama's face, and that is evidence the McCain camp is in a panic?

I see this being at best a draw for Obama -- and he might lose, due to the hypocrisy factor, namely, who is Obama, who made 4 million last year, to declare McCain out of touch economically?

I guess by this reasoning the McCain camp was "in a panic" when they threw the celebrity ad at Obama after Obama's big event in Germany?

Pretty good panic, that. A few more panics like that and Obama's out of the running.

I call it most likely a draw.

And the problem for Obama is that he fired first, which makes it quite possible it will backfire on him if he's considered to be living in a glass house on the issue (esp one got with the assistance of a man who was clearly corrupt).

No, the problem is that no one who (2.00 / 2)

hasn't been closely following the blogs the last year through the Dem primaries really knows anything about Rezko. It's too hard to explain in one soundbite, and you'd have to start talking about the trial and then you'd have to try to talk about how come Obama never went to trial if he was in cahoots with this guy and what did he do wrong and how is the house tied into all that etc etc etc.

Versus

Ten. glittering. mansions.

That's what I mean by theatre.

out that declaring that McCain is "in a panic" is little more than a delusion, that's a "McCain point"?

Does reality and fact ever intrude into your little world?

Again, I see this as most likely a draw.

Try to remember one important reason that Bush Senior lost big time over the supermarket scanner issue. It wasn't simply that he was perceived as economically out of touch over the issue, it was that the same could not be said for his opponent, Bill Clinton, who certainly at the time was not making 4 mil in a single year, and did not have himself a reputation for being out-of-touch economically.

Obama and McCain going after each other on this point is going to be the Pot and the Kettle trading insults.

A draw.

Re: So if one points (none / 0)

Obama earned his money. He grew up poor and worked hard for everything he has.

John McCain is the son of an Admiral and married Cindy and her wealth.

This isn't about McCain being rich, per se. It's about him being so rich he doesn't understand the economy.

The Rezko thing doesn't make a bit of a dent in this narrative, especially since Obama was cleared of any wrongdoing in that issue.

Re: So if one points (none / 0)

Not really.  For one, not nearly as much free media play going on for the Rezko ad. additionally it's way old news and easily debunked "more of the same McCain".

As for the Money thing, using McCains own words Obamas 4 million makes him middle class, and he actually earned that money by writing his own books.  McCain left his crippled wife to marry his.  Highlighting his insane wealth leads to questions about the dishonorable way that he got it.

The rezko thing might have had a better chance of sticking if it hadn't come after a day of spastic flailing for a message.

I have no doubt that McManchurian's little propaganda shop will come out with some new vile smear in a few days cause really thats all he's got.

No, this is good stuff.  What the public cares about is whether a candidate can dish it out as well as take it.  I don't think the public cares that McCain has seven houses.  If Obama can go all the way, though--"Who says the economy is doing well?  Scrooge McDuck McCain"--that'll show he can mix it up.

In real life people don't respect it when someone takes crap and doesn't dish it out.  In this situation the Dems have an added bonus--McCain probably is the sort of thin-skinned guy who can dish it out but can't take it.  That's how Bush beat him in 2000.

You don't get it at all.  McCain's houses and forgetfulness tie into several themes - age, memory, wealth, the economy, and aloofness.  Rezko says nothing about those themes.  People vote based on issues that affect them, not inside baseball scandals (in which they assume that all politicians engage).

Re: In a panic? (2.00 / 1)

Obama only made $4 million last year?
That's not even rich by John McCain's standards:

Asked by Warren "at what point--give me a number, give me a specific number--[...]do you move from middle class to rich?", McCain replied "How about $5 million?"

Obama has worked his way up the ladder.
John McCain got a legacy appointment to the Naval Academy and dumped his wife after coming home from Vietnam to marry a rich heiress. Since then he's spent almost 30 years in Washington living off the government and his wife's money.
And you think Obama is out of touch because he made money off of book sales in 2007?

McCain camp must be feeling like...... (2.00 / 3)

President-elect Barack Obama spent the day thanking the people who helped him win the election. Obama's first phone call was to Sarah Palin.

Wow, talking point city (2.00 / 5)

They're not going to have any ammo left by October if they respond like that to Obama calling him on one ridiculous comment.

Re: (Updated) McCain Campaign Panics: Rezko, POW (1.00 / 2)

Obama was unwise to talk about real estate.

I will stop there until its clear who the VP is.

Come on. (2.00 / 3)

The Rezko thing is over and done with.  Obama was never even mentioned in the trial.  Clinton almost certainly isn't going to be the VP; if that's what you're holding off for, don't.  You can always say it was a joke later.

Re: (Updated) McCain Campaign Panics: Rezko, POW (2.00 / 2)

From what I read about the Rezko trial, Obama wasn't really mentioned but Karl Rove and the GOP was.

Rezko expected the AG to be replaced by Karl Rove and the White House with someone that would not continue the case.  I really don't think McCain camp should be bringing him up.
