The Olympics, Title IX and equal rights for women

A thread celebrating a great victory by the US women's Olympic soccer team got me thinking, perhaps it's time to remind anyone with a daughter or a grand-daughter, and maybe a belief that equal rights and opportunities for women JUST might be an important issue about John McCain.

Well, if are thinking of voting for John McCain, IMHO, you just lost any rights to celebrate in this victory or probably a vast majority of the other great competitive efforts put forth by America's great women's Olympic team.

Cause, you want to talk about support, there is great, there is partial and there is ABYSMAL support.

Check out this history from the women's AAUW advocacy group for John McCain's support of key issues supporting equal treatment for America's women's athletes.

Maybe you might think, OK, sure, he votes as a conservative on Abortion, maybe he has some true religious context for that.

But, how do you vote that poorly to not support simple equality for women in college athletics?

And, let's be clear. You may think athletics are bunk, but we are talking about scholarships here, how many of these young women used that scholarship to become doctors, businesswomen, to get a leg up and bust that glass ceiling a little more?

But, evidently, it ain't religious with John McCain.

He's just plain against equal rights for women.

So I'm just saying, we can all celebrate a gutsy victory today, and ALL the great performances by our women's teams at the Olympic.

And send a big Bronx cheer to John McCain: THANKS FOR NOTHING!
